A middle-aged man joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie after a traumatic home invasion, facing rural policing challenges while trying to prove he finally has something worth fighting for.

Henry Fonda stars as Col. J. C. Kincaid, crusty patriarch of a Texas family. Kincaid's weak-willed son Floyd (George Grizzard) wants to get into the old man's good graces so that he can develop the Colonel's vast land ownings. Floyd arranges a city-wide celebration lauding Kincaid as the oldest living graduate of a nearby military academy. The festivities serve only to make the already sour Kincaid even more truculent and miserable. Adapted from Preston Jones' 1974 play and originally telecast live from Dallas' Southern Methodist University on April 7, 1980.

Musical comedy star Jimmy Leighter wants to get away from show biz and his leading lady Winnie Clark, so he joins the Army. There he gets the order to put on a show, Winnie Clark appears in a camp show, hears about his task and offers him his help. He thinks, she does it for her publicity only, so he doesn't want to know anything about this, till he finds out, that she has no such intentions.

Random gags around military life, set on an army base. A bugler uses a jukebox to play reveille. In formation, one private has a great deal of trouble remembering what comes after "3"; after he gets it, he decides not to go for the $32 question. In the mess hall, the machine gunners machine gun their food while the bombers catch falling biscuits. The infantry marches for miles - past a "next time, take the train" billboard.

On the advice of a fortune teller in a bathroom, Janet Varney leaves showbiz behind to become a psychic. Exploring her gifts (such as they are), Janet parses the future of a Los Angeles populated by the famous, the not-yet-famous, from aspiring cult leaders to aging boy bands. She reads palms, cards and the occasional piece of cheese to help those seeking answers, herself most of all.
